Austria is known for its culture and music the world over. At the heart of Europe,
its stunning scenery draws in large numbers of tourists, yet this beautiful country
is spiritually empty. While the Catholic Church is in rapid decline, few look elsewhere
for spiritual peace. Evangelicals total just over 40,000 people.
GBM has been involved in Austria for over thirty years. For much of this time we
were supporting church planters. One of the churches planted continues, though the
two other churches have merged into other local churches. There is a spiritual openness
among young people, though the Austrian student work (ÖSM) is very small compared
to the UK.
