Over the last couple of years our Envision Teams have developed into a well-established pattern: a structured programme with fixed dates, for a larger group led by a team leader. An Envision Placement is much more tailor-made for you and your circumstances.

You could serve for three weeks, or for anything up to a year. Typically people go to serve for about three months, but sometimes people want to extend this when they get settled, which is fine by us. Flexibility is all part of a Placement. We are also flexible about where they happen. The two main destinations are the Philippines and South Africa, but we have arranged Placements for those who want to do a year’s student evangelism in Europe as part of their Erasmus year, or for a mature Christian to go and support a family working in a remote area. Feel free to come and suggest possibilities.

In the Philippines, we organise Envision Placements with Cubao Reformed Baptist Church, a growing church in downtown Manila. The Church has a number of ministries, including a successful drop-in centre for the homeless every Thursday, and Christian Compassion Ministries which provides residential homes for abused children and education sponsorship for the poorest. Typically, a Placement in Manila will involve a blend of office-based administration (they value good English skills) and tutoring of the children in the homes, as well as serving in the drop-in outreach and various other ways that the church reaches out, such as pop-up medical clinics. You would live in one of the children’s homes, and travel around in the CCM minibuses.

In South Africa, we have established a good partnership with Morning Star Children’s Centre and Welkom Baptist Church. Morning Star is a Christian day centre for children with HIV/AIDS. In South Africa, 10 million people are HIV positive in a population of 53 million. Morning Star seeks to care for children from the poorest backgrounds, getting them into education and caring for special needs. There are opportunities to serve alongside the staff on a supernumerary basis, giving the children the attention they so rarely get, and leading craft sessions with the children. There is also a sewing livelihood project for mothers. Welkom Baptist Church runs a large youth work programme, and they are particularly keen to make use of volunteers in discipling young people. Florrie Rushbrook and Megan Sayers have been serving a ten-week Placement in Welkom, and have enjoyed leading an after-school club for teenage girls, trying to apply the Bible to their lives, as well as serving in the regular Friday evening youth group and meeting up with some of the group at other times in the week. They have also gone on trips into the Thabong township to deliver food parcels, and have taken a group on a holiday to Durban to enjoy the sea for the first time in their lives.

We like Placements to be in pairs if possible, as we think this reflects the pattern of Jesus with his disciples, and you can be a good support for each other. Both in Welkom and Manila you are supervised by local Christian workers.
