Peru is a country of contrasts. The dry coastal zone is the most European and international, and is also the most frequently affected by earthquakes as Peru sits on the Pacific ‘ring of fire.’ The Andes mountains are the home of the Quechua peoples, and is mostly agricultural. Beyond the mountains lies the Amazon basin, the source of the Amazon rising in northern Peru, and many tribal peoples live in the Peruvian jungle.

The growth of the church in Peru is remarkable, from 1% in 1960 to 11.6% in 2010. Often this has been in the face of persecution, with hundreds of pastors being martyred. The church has become indigenous, and the Bible is being translated into many languages and dialects.

Yet it has been estimated that 92% of the pastors in the jungle areas have no theological training. There are also huge needs among the poorest parts of society, where people live in very basic conditions in the favelas that cling to steep hillsides.
